Bill Maakestad

Tai Chi & Qigong

An introduction to two ancient mind-body arts that are as relevant today as they were two thousand years ago. If you want to lower your stress level, reduce your anxiety, restore your balance, and increase your overall sense of well-being, you’ve come to the right place. All ages welcome! Open to new as well as to continuing Tai Chi/Qigong students.

In his Tai Chi & Qigong class at Free Range, Bill is dedicated to offering guided exploration of these two ancient Chinese energetic arts—energetic, because both practices are centered on the belief in an intrinsic life energy known as qi (“life force” or “spirit breath”).  The practices are related and for centuries have been practiced together, though recently they have been receiving significant attention in the West because many respected research institutions, such as the Harvard Medical School and Mayo Clinic, have recognized their superior health benefits.  Bill welcomes people of all ages and abilities to attend his class and learn first-hand about the active, mindful relaxation that Tai Chi and Qigong offer.

Bill, who retired as a professor from WIU in 2009, began his training with Willie Jones, an experienced martial arts practitioner of Taekwondo as well as Tai Chi.  Bill has continued to study and incorporate contributions from David-Dorian Ross, International Tai Chi Instructor; Dr. Peter Wayne, Director of Integrative Medicine Research at Harvard Medical School/Brigham & Women’s Hospital; and especially William C.C. Chen, legendary Tai Chi Master who helped introduce the West to Tai Chi.

Gloria Barr, Reiki Master

Reiki

Reiki is an ancient natural healing treatment used to assist in healing and promoting overall balance within the body. It is administered by a Certified Reiki Practitioner by using gentle, noninvasive touch to influence and support the body’s natural energy flow. Reiki is offered to a fully-clothed client through hands off, or hands on, gentle touch. Clients have reported less anxiety and pain plus more energy and restful sleep. Reiki does not replace medical treatment, but can be a good complement to healing and stress relief.

AJ fell in love with dance by the age of five and took classes in ballet through college. In high school, she studied both ballet and jazz with the Bonnie Haney Dance Company in the Fargo, North Dakota area.  Later, she took swing dance lessons weekly, for years, at both the Wabasha Street Caves and the Tapestry Folkdance Center in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, and belly dance classes at The Cassandra School in Minneapolis.

She’s been certified in Zumba since 2010 and in Belly Dance Fitness since 2013.  When she moved to Macomb, she was thrilled to join the belly dance troupe, Banat Casablanca, and enjoyed many Belly Fit classes with Anne Dixon when she was teaching at Free Range Yoga.
